China’s African Swine Fever Epidemic

SAZON BRIEF:

China has been battling a deadly outbreak of African Swine Fever which is harmless to humans but unfortunately infects pigs at a 90% death rate that usually only takes about a week from infection to a hemorrhaging death.

Chinese hog farmers experienced a sweep of the virus which took half of the world’s pork supply leaving farmers and millions of industry workers worried about the shortage of the product which provides their main source of income.

It was reported that tons of pounds of reserve supply have been released to the market for the holidays but it is unknown how long it will take to get this virus under control in the country where up until recently more than half of the world’s pork came from.
